MANOR Park Travellers moved joint top of Division two of the Whatley Recordon Malvern Table Tennis League with a comfortable win over Malvern Juniors A.
Mike Bellfield preserved his unbeaten record with three wins. Martin Snee also won three but both were taken to five sets by David Smith who avoided the whitewash by beating Bob Atyeo 11-9 in the final set. Bob won his other two singles and the doubles with Martin.
Travellers share the lead with Ledbury Exhaust who were indebted to three wins from John Meredith against Manor Park Rangers. He was made to fight all the way by Dave Steen, John eventually winning 13-11 in the fifth set. Five other games went to a deciding set in a very tight match, Stewart Moss won two and Ray Cook one plus the doubles with John for the visitors, whilst Dave, Elaine Mills and Nick Haggar each won one for Rangers.
It has been a mixed couple of weeks for Manor Park Wombats. First they suffered a narrow defeat to YMCA Vulcans thanks to three victories for debutante Dave Williams and two from Beryl Shammon.
A win each for Tony Birch, Steve Glazzard and Richard Bennet earned a point for Wombats.
The following week Paul Lythgoe replaced Richard as they crushed Crackpots B 10-0 although Paul was give a tough match by Max Davison before winning 11-6 in the final set.
Crackpots B fared slightly better in the derby match with Crackpots E. Two wins for Ted Cates and one for Stephen Lindner earned them a point. Three wins for Colin Dolding, two for James Palmer (and together the doubles) and one for Nick Gilbert secured the win for the home team.
Two victories for Nick Price and one for Alan Croad were not enough for Vulcans when they entertained Rangers. Debutante Simon Morgan was the hero for the visitors with three wins. Dave Steen won two and Elaine Mills one as Rangers came from 4-2 behind.
Broadheath's team of David Elliott, John Stanier and Peter Roberts proved too strong for two man CSSC Trojans although Dave Huntley was unlucky to lose in the fifth set against both John and Peter.
RESULTS: Juniors A 1, MP Travellers 9; Manor Park Rangers 3, Ledbury Exhaust 7; Manor Park Wombats 4, YMCA Vulcans 6; Crackpots E 7, Crackpots B 3; Vulcans 4, Manor Park Rangers 6; Broadheath Belters 10, CSSC Trojans 0; Crackpots B 0, Manor Park Wombats 10.
CRACKPOTS C had a tough evening with Abbey College who recorded their first Division Three win of the season and rose two places up the league table.
However nobody in either team won all their sets or ended up without a win. Cyrus Hong-Ki and Henry Chen both won two and the doubles for the Abbey and Henry Hin Mam one singles. Richard Cullis won two singles and Edward Palmer and Stan Ginn one each for Crackpots. Three sets went to a fifth game and another four to a fourth.
At halfway M P Juniors were losing 5-0 in their match with Nomads but then Jack Higgs and Ben Salisbury won the doubles in three straight games. These two then went on to win their remaining singles and a very valuable point. Kevin Howard won all his sets and Geoff Davies two and Adrian Fray one.
Colin Sage was in good form and won all his sets for Juniors C. Alan Holmes, Steve Mulka and Graham Pryce Jones each won two for Police and Alan and Steve the doubles, five sets needed extra games and 13 were only won by two points and others by three points.
RESULTS: Abbey College 6, Crackpots C 4; Police 7, Malvern Juniors C 3; CSSC Nomads 6, Manor Park Juniors 4.
