After the two sides traded early goals, Cambridge's midfield began to wrestle control as they enjoyed much of the play.
Brock had to save well on 10 minutes when Young sneaked through the back line after Hinton slipped but the Harriers keeper was well positioned to parry. Bo Henriksen was involved in plenty of attacking action early on
Harriers hit back and a good exchange of passes down the right between Bennett and Melligan allowed the former player to rifle a low shot that keeper Marshall blocked with his leg.
However, Lively Cambridge countered on 18 minutes when Kitson release Riza whose first-time shot dipped wide of Brock's left-hand post.
Kitson turned brilliantly in the box moments later only to fire narrowly over the bar.
Harriers came close to regaining the lead on 24 minutes only for a vital goalline clearance by Fleming to deny Broughton as he was about to pounce.
The chance had been set up after Henriksen, profiting on good work by Melligan and Williams, burst into the box only for Marshall to half save the Danish striker's low drive.
