ORGANISERS of a huge city bonfire event are appealing to businesses for donations so an organised display can go ahead.

Tolladine Community Centre bosses are anxious to net £1,000 so the event can go ahead and stop youngsters setting up their own events.

Allan Poyner, community worker at Tolladine Community Centre said: "Businesses in Tolladine who would be willing to back the event would be ideal and it would be really appreciated.

"I think it's better to have a bonfire that is organised because it lessens the need for fireworks in people's back gardens.

"But we need to make sure the events are affordable to people and that is why we are asking businesses to help.

"If we have to charge the earth for a fireworks display and bonfire, then people won't be able to come."

The plea for cash comes after fireworks were seized at the Countryside Centre car boot sale, in Spetchley, on Sunday, October 13, by trading standards and police officers.

They confiscated 80 fireworks after a complaint from a member of the public that the fireworks were being illegally sold.

"Selling fireworks that are not properly stored on licensed premises is a serious matter and shows total disregard for public safety," said John Dell, Worcestershire trading standards divisional manager.

"This could have led to an accident causing serious injuries.

"Any person wishing to sell fireworks must be registered with the local authority and the fireworks must be safely stored on licensed premises."
