August 5, 1977
ELVIS is coming to Redditch on Saturday night - Elvis Costello, that is, plus his band, The Attractions, who will be playing at Tracy's tomorrow night, August 6.
And for some people, he is the King of the New Wave.
Elvis first sprang to form last year with one of the very best singles of 1976, Less Than Zero, on the small Stiff record label.
Because he is a new name and because Stiff have been associated with punk and new wave bands, it was assumed that Costello was of that ilk.
But although he is now in the sense that he is a new name and his music, like most of the new wave, is a refreshing change, the themes he uses are well known.
He also plays very good but restrained guitar.
His first album, My Aim Is True, has just been released and seems to have fulfilled all the predictions people have been making about him.
Check him out because I have a feeling he could be in store for much bigger things in a couple of years.
