PROMOTION is the aim for new Reds manager Nicky Cross as he embarks on his first season in charge.
But the former West Brom ace has been told he has three years to take United to the next level.
After deciding to take the Valley hotseat late last season, Cross has had to cope with the loss of eight players and a rash of close season injuries.
And he said being forced to put out make-do-and-mend sides will put his charges back at the start of the season.
But Cross was quick to point to Gavin Barratt and Michael Campbell as potential stars of the future who emerged from his ragtag pre-season squad.
