THERE were some shock results when the Worcestershire County Junior Table Tennis Championships were held at Christopher Whitehead High School.

Fifty-five juniors took part -- 42 boys and 13 girls from the Worcester, Malvern, Kidderminster, Evesham, Dudley, Bromsgrove and Redditch leagues.

The largest individual entry came from the Evesham League -- with 17 players taking part.

There was a big surprise in the junior boys singles event when Tom McDermott (Kidderminster), title holder and number one seed, was beaten in the semi-finals by fourth seed Robert Hatherly also from Kidderminster in five sets.

In the other semi-final Mat-thew Hutton (Dudley), the number three seed, beat Joe Higgs (Malvern) the number two in three close sets.

In the final, the unflappable Hutton beat Hatherly 11-7, 10-12, 11-8, 11-5 to win the title for the first time after being runner-up last year.

There was no surprise in the junior girls singles with Kendall Smith (Kidderminster) -- the county title holder and number one county junior player and by far the most experienced girl present -- beating Worcester's Emma Williams in the final.

Thirteeen-year-old Williams had won through her group by beating Stephanie Beswick, Lynsey Garbutt and Leanne Sully.

In the cadet boys singles, Ben Salisbury (Malvern) beat Jack Higgs (Malvern) in the final in a nail-biting five-setter. After losing the first game 5-11, Salisbury did well to come back to win 11-6, 11-9, 5-11, 11-9.

The cadet girls singles final saw Williams playing Hannah Garbutt (Dudley). The Wor-cester girl had beaten Garbutt in the cadet county trials in October, but on this occasion lost a close game.

Garbutt won the first two games 11-4, 12-10, but Williams battled back to win the next two 11-8, 13-11. The last game went to Garbutt 11-8 to take the title from Williams who won it last year.

The boys doubles was won by Joe Higgs and Anthony Wiseman (Malvern) who beat Matthew Hutton (Dudley) and Matthew Lang (Malvern) in the final 11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9.

Kendall Smith and Eleanor Lasota (Evesham) retained the girls doubles title, beating sisters Rachel and Katie Sellick (Evesham) in the final 11-9, 11-6, 11-9.

County Association president Vera Royal presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up.
