SHOPPING should be easier in Broadway for disabled people now a free wheelchair facility is set to return in the New Year.

Two months ago villagers were up in arms when Wychavon District Council ordered the removal of two wheelchairs from the public toilet attendant's working area in Church Road car park.

The chairman of Broadway Parish Council, Peter Riley had placed them there after Jim Burbridge, the toilet attended, had identified the need.

Now the council has had a change of heart and has decided the wheelchairs can return provided their use is covered by insurance.

Parish clerk Don Shryane said: "The parish has a public liability insurance of up to £10m. We have contacted our insurance company and are pretty confident that we will be covered in case of accident."

Head of Community Services Brian Norfolk said: "We are not entirely happy with the location but so long as insurance cover is provided the wheelchairs can return."

Martin Totten, sales director of Wychavon's cleaning services contractor, Mighty Cleaners, said: "We are always pleased to help anybody with a disability as long the insurance question is sorted out."
