AS the annual spectacle of Boxing Day hunt meets creeps up on us again, I would urge your readers to give some thought to this archaic and cruel tradition.

I would urge them to take action - either to turn up to see the local hunt meet or to write to their MP.

They might wish to attend one of the meets where the League Against Cruel Sports organises an annual demonstration. These are listed on our website at www.league.uk.com

I would reassure your readers that there is no cruelty in the high street or in the market place. There is no harm at all in riders in red coats drinking from the stirrup cup and setting off to ride. But all this could happily continue without chasing and killing wild animals with dogs. Riders could follow an artificial scent and no one on earth would object.

This year, the League Against Cruel Sports sent a representative along to a drag hunt and discovered that most riders preferred it to chasing foxes.

The abuse of animals only comes when a fox or other animal is found to pursue.

In a civilised society, it is wrong to chase an animal and kill it with dogs.
