AN Upton man who cycles miles to visit the sick and housebound and works in the kitchen for a weekly lunch club has become the first person to receive a newly-devised award.

Upton Town Council created the honour after they were contacted by a member of the public describing the deeds of Martin Harker, of Wheatley Lane.

At a ceremony on Tuesday, December 17, councillors heard that the 74-year-old pedals miles through all weathers to talk to people who cannot get out and about. He also peels potatoes and washes up for around 50 people at the town's weekly Luncheon Club.

Mayor Eric White presented Mr Harker with a framed certificate in recognition of his deeds, adding that he hoped to be able to present similar awards to others who have made outstanding contributions to their communities in future.

Mr Harker said there were many people who did similar work.

"There's an awful lot of good work being done and an awful lot of lights hidden under bushels," he said. "Nobody who does this sort of work does it for publicity."

Mr Harker congratulated the council for setting up the award and said more people should use bicycles when they take to the road, rather than relying on cars.

"It's healthier, cheaper and no pollution is involved," he said.
