DEAR EDITOR - The under-investment in care and residential homes has generally been very consistent over the last nine years - (comment from Help the Aged sponsor person on ITV).
The Care Standards Commission's recommendations which come into force in six years time, not only deals with the cubic capacity of rooms but lays down the minimum acceptable level that standards must reach. Do we wish to have as the norm the attitude in the US where advertised warnings about care standards are on the TV and bill boards on the highway constantly.
If the industry put its house in order by taking the initiative in in-service training and looking after its staff this would go a long way towards allaying public concerns about the shoddy care and occasional downright abuse in some homes.
Stop being negative, and yes, we know funding must increase.
Councillor D McGrath,
(Lab - Beacon),
Bromsgrove.
