OLD electric blankets have been recycled to keep stray pets warm over the winter.

People who were told their electric blankets were unsafe by the Safety in the Home and Electric Blanket Assessment donated them to keep animals warm.

Blankets where the fabric was still in good condition had the flex and plug removed so they could not be plugged in and were re-used as pet bedding.

"People who brought their blankets along and were advised that it was old or not be used for safety reason thought that recycling was a good idea and were reassured their blanket would be put to good use," said Christina Attwood heath improvement facilitator at Wyre Forest PCT.

The blankets were tried out for size by animals at the Bay Tree Veterinary Surgery in Stourport-on-Severn.

Carol Smith of Hereford and Worcester Animal Rescue, which is caring for the strays, said the animals were all very grateful.

"These blankets will provide comfort to many stray animals," said Mrs Smith.

"Already, we are very busy looking after unwanted pets.

"All puppies are adorable but they need loving owners who are prepared to take on the responsibility of pet ownership."
