OVERCOMING barriers posed by mental illness has earned a Kidderminster organisation plaudits.

The Friendly Firm has received an achievement certificate for its work on a CD and presentation pack shown to employers to educate and dispel the myths regarding mental health issues in the workplace.

Six people have worked together to create the CD.

It was made with the help of Worcestershire County Council's social services department, Kidderminster College and Wyre Forest Mental Health Trust.

The award came from the Lilly Schizophrenia Reintegration - a scheme that provides encouragement and recognition for the development of programmes which enable people with schizophrenia and related disorders to blend into society.

The firm, a mental health service user-led group, is the brainchild of Les Rising, social services employment and training manager.

He said: "I formed the group three years ago and I am proud to say that they have worked very hard to get this far.

"To receive some recognition for their effort is a great boost.

"But it does not have to stop here, there is a lot more work to do and many more employers to talk to."

The firm is based at the county council's Edward Parry Centre, Coventry Street, Kidderminster.

Centre manager Simon Cox said: "The certificate not only reflects the dedicated work of the members of The Friendly Firm, but more importantly, their achievement enables people who have experienced serious mental illness back to employment.

"In doing so, they counter the stigma that frequently is associated with mental illness."

Employers who would like more information on the presentation pack should call Mr Rising or co-ordinator Carrie Cooling on 01562 513937.
