PATIENTS are getting a bigger say in the way GP surgeries operate after being encouraged to speak up by health chiefs.

All but one of the 14 surgeries in Wyre Forest now have their own Patient Participation Group, which gets financial help from the district's primary care trust to carry out surveys and produce newsletters.

At some surgeries the groups have already triggered changes.

Diane Millett, practice manager at Aylmer Lodge surgery in Franche Road, Kidderminster, said several changes had emerged as a result of feedback from patients through the surgery's group, which was set up in 1999.

A one-way system had been introduced in the busy car park at the suggestion of one patient, while new cushions had been made available to raise the height of chairs in the waiting room when necessary.

Janie Thomas, chairman of the patient participation group at Stanmore House surgery, in Linden Avenue, Kidderminster, said a survey carried out among patients had also resulted in changes.

"These include addressing minor issues such as changing the lighting, blinds and seating in the waiting area, and providing a television, children's play area and more information for patients."

She added a more serious concern about the lack of privacy when speaking to staff by phone had resulted in phone calls now being answered in a separate room.

Each group meets regularly with doctors and other practice staff to make suggestions on improvements.

The chairmen of the patient groups also meet regularly with Stella Keysell, vice-chairman of Wyre Forest Primary Care Trust, and a senior trust manager to discuss general views and share information.

Patients who want to get involved with their surgery's group can do so by contacting the practice manager or a member of staff, or by writing to the group chairman via the surgery.
