A DISTRESSED Bromsgrove man caused the M5 between junctions three and four at Rubery, to be closed for nearly 50 minutes last week.

The 38-year-old man, who was not named, was perched on a motorway bridge near Gannow Green Lane, at Waseley Hills Country Park, just before noon on December 23, when a member of the public alerted police.

West Mercia police received dozens of calls from drivers worried about the man's safety.

The motorway was closed in both directions while a police negotiator talked to the man. He was then arrested under the Mental Health Act for his own safety and taken to Redditch police station for assessment.

The man was seen by a doctor and admitted to Brookhaven Hospital, Bromsgrove. The hospital is based at the Princess of Wales Community Hospital, Stourbridge Road, and is for people with mental health problems.

The motorway was reopened at 1.15pm.
