n Through the Tempests Dark and Wild - A Story of Mary Shelley, creator of Frankenstein by Sharon Darrow, illustrated by Angela Barrett (Walker Books, £12.99).

Dark, wild and sinister - these are the words which are best used to describe this impressively illustrated hardback treasure which will appeal to the more robust imaginations of youngsters over the age of eight.

If your child or relative has developed a taste for the macabre then this is the book for him or her, yet the tales are far from gruesome.

They deal with friendships and fears drawn from Mary Shelley's own childhood experiences and imaginings.

The illustrations are often more scary than the words, but have been executed with great attention to the words and evoke a dark and eery environment.

The writing is evocative and poetic, but the sentences are often filled with numerous parentheses, which some children might find off-putting.

However, for those with bottomless imaginations and a thirst to be transported into other worlds it is a very good buy.

It is a beautiful book, but not for the faint-hearted child prone to nightmares.
