A TOWN builder, who has worked on a Droitwich housing estate, will find out if he has been crowned best in Britain on Friday.

Garry Johnson, who was responsible for overseeing work on The Ridings estate, was named the regional winner in a prestigious competition for house builders.

Garry won the award for the quality of work on the site and went through to the finals of the National House-Building Council (NHBC) Pride in the Job awards, which will be held in London.

The local builder will find out whether he has beaten 22 other site managers to secure the UK title of supreme winner.

Garry, who works for William Davis, is no stranger to success in the competition. This is the second consecutive year that he has won the regional award.

The builder, who says he enjoys setting sites up and seeing them through, has fought his way through three regional heats to gain his place in the UK finals.

Around 16,000 site managers are judged for the competition, which aims to find the best house-building site managers, and he is now one of just 23 finalists in contention for the top award.

David Chapman, NHBC senior regional director and chairman of the judging panel, praised the regional winners for their efforts.

"In this age of mass production it is sometimes forgotten that houses are still a predominantly handcrafted product.

"Over 15 different trades and about 23,000 different components go into building a home and site managers have the task of co-ordinating it all.

"They are at the sharp end of house building yet the Pride In the Job winners deliver top quality work - they have the ability to motivate their teams to get the very best from them."
