A busy new year has been planned by the Ledbury Poetry Festival, including a new series of "Talking Poetry" sessions and a Burns Night event.

The venue for the celebration of Scotland's national poet, on Saturday, January 25, will be The Verzons Hotel.

Jo Kingham, chairman of the Friends of the Ledbury Poetry Festival, said: "Fluff up your sporrans and dust down your trews.

"Living closer to the border of Wales than Scotland, we are rather ignorant of what an orthodox Burns night should be, but John Burns, who is no relation, will be our master of ceremonies and will use his imagination to boldly go where no Burns Night has gone before."

The first Talking Poetry event for 2003 will take place on January 26, in The Little Room Upstairs at The Brewery Inn in Bye Street, from 7.30pm.

Poet Alicia Stubbersfield will talk about the work of Emily Dickinson.

On February 26, poet Roz Goddard, who gave a well-received reading at the festival's "Poetry Breakfast" last summer, will discuss the writings of Billy Collins.

Other poets to be discussed in the months to come will include Menna Elyfn, Louis Macneice, Philip Gross and Anne Stevenson. Further details on 01531 634156.
