A SPARKLING jazz piano concerto performed by a celebrated South American musician is to form the centre of a concert given by the Orchestra of St John's.

Ravel's Piano Concerto in G will be played by Brazilian pianist Christina Ortiz "in the style of Mozart and Saint-Sans" on Wednesday, January 25 in Cheltenham.

Also on the programme is his more reflective Le Tombeau de Couperin, which harks back to music of an earlier age, alongside Faur's Pavane.

Works by Sibelius and Finzi will complete the concert, which will be conducted by John Lubbock, founder of the ensemble.

The following night will feature music by Bartk, Zemlinsky, Goldschmidt, Krasa and Krenek that has been suppressed at some point during its life.

The Andrusier Ensemble will be performing the thought-provoking programme, which is based round clarinet, strings and piano.

Information and bookings for the concerts, which will take place in the Town Hall at 7.30pm and the Pittville Pump Room at 8pm respectively, can be obtained on 01242 227979.
