JOHN Whittingslow, who retired as Wyre Forest's chief environment health officer after a lifetime's service to public health in the district, has died from cancer. He was 76.
He joined the borough health service from King Charles I School in 1942, and returned after service in the Royal Navy.
He became chief public health officer in 1971.
He was a lifelong rugby enthusiast and captained the Old Carolians from 1949-51. He was president of the Old Carolians Association in 1976 and had been chairman of the Old Carolians' club in Church Street.
He was also chairman of the local branch of the Worcestershire Association for the Blind.
He married, first Patricia Hooper, a one-time Shuttle reporter, and after her death in 1985, Margaret Blackford. He is survived by his widow and a son of the first marriage.
Mr Whittingslow died last week at his home at Milson, Cleobury Mortimer.
