YOUNGSTERS have been enjoying Book Week with many celebrations of the written word across the county.
Activities included everything from dressing up as famous literary characters to a visit from a top children's author.
Denis Bond, who has written more than 60 children's books, dropped in to St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School and gave hints and tips to budding writers.
"The children responded really well to the event, and Mr Bond's enthusiasm was fantastic" said Louis Bury, the school's literary co-ordinator.
Pupils at the Warndon-based school also dressed up as their favourite characters, with everything from Winnie the Pooh to Lord of the Rings represented.
Children at another city school, St Mary's Convent, also thoroughly enjoyed their book day, which involved readings, book quizzes and a range of books from Bob the Builder to The Hobbit.
"The day promoted reading in and out of school," said Sue Cookson, head of the preparatory school.
"The children read a great deal anyway but it certainly brought books to life."
And Warndon Infant School also emphasised reading on World Book Day with a series of class presentations based on their favourite books.
"The children all thought it was great and it has definitely increased their enthusiasm for books," said deputy head Julia Millwood.
"And with television and computers, books are sometimes left out so it's really important that the day gets great support."
