A SEX shop planned to open near a school is attracting growing opposition in Worcester.

The planned shop will be sited on Barbourne Road, some 100 yards from St George's CE Primary School.

Steve Mills, head of St George's School, has slammed plans to open the shop on the site of the former Victoria Wine off-licence which closed in September.

He has written to the parents of his 210 pupils to inform them about the application.

"It is not the kind of place school children as young as four years old should have to walk past," he said.

City councillor Richard Bird is calling on the public to write to Worcester City Council's licensing committee in opposition to the plan.

"It's not really the type of shop that fits in with a butcher, a baker and candlestick maker," said Coun Bird.

Father Paul Fitzpatrick from St George's Church in nearby Sansome Way agreed the shop should not be sited near a school.

"It is not the influence we want on our children," said Father Fitzpatrick.

"There is also the moral question of exploitation of women, which we are against."

Kevin Mitchell of Leeds-based Provincial Enterprises Ltd has made the application for the licence.

If it is granted it will be only the second such shop in the city, with the other on Lowesmoor.
