SMOKERS who want to give up cigarettes were being urged today - National No Smoking Day - to take advice from their local pharmacists.
Hooman Ghalamkari, community pharmacist at Dines Green, Worcester, said they can give expert advice on how to kick the habit and offer support to those using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), which gradually weans patients off nicotine while they concentrate on breaking their smoking habits.
Mr Ghalamkari's DG Pharmacy in Gresham Road, has two nurse practitioners, Pauline Gummer and Sue Francis, who hold clinics at the pharmacy every week.
They give blood pressure readings, and are able to offer advice, including help for people who want to give up smoking.
The clinics take place on Mondays from 9.30am to 1pm, Tuesdays between 2.30 and 4pm and Thursdays (9.30-11.30am).
"Pharmacists have an important role to play in supporting those people who want to stop smoking," said Mr Ghalamkari.
"Giving up smoking requires planning, encouragement, support and motivation."
