WORCESTERSHIRE golfer John Bickerton tees off at the Qatar Masters tomorrow believing that after what happened in Dubai on Sunday, anything is possible.

The Droitwich Golf Club member has been trying since 1993 to taste victory on the European Tour, finishing second no fewer than five times.

But he takes real heart from Dutchman Robert-Jan Derksen's achievement in the Desert Classic, when the world number 593 defeated Ernie Els, ranked number two.

"It opens your eyes and shows what can be done," said the Bromsgrove-based 33-year-old. "If it's your time it's your time and it proves a point.

"But it does not surprise me any more. Guys would not be here unless they really knew how to play -- you simply would not last long because the standard is so good now."

Derksen is not playing in Doha, but Hereford's David Park is among the field along with Ryder Cup trio Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley and Phillip Price, plus Belfry vice-captain Ian Woosnam, who finished joint third last weekend seven days after his 45th birthday.
