A CAMPAIGN group has been set up to get Broadband internet in Alcester.

The group, made up of representatives from town business and schools, have roped in the oldest form of communication - Town Crier Keith Tomlinson - to encourage residents to register.

He will be with members outside the Post Office, High Street, on Saturday at 10am.

The group believes Alcester schools, businesses and internet surfers are losing out on Broadband because BT will not install the service until enough people register an interest.

Mike Woollacott, of the Minerva Mill Innovation Centre, said: "Broadband will not only help people to download files quickly but also upload as well.

"Businesses in Birmingham and Stratford already have the service and by not having it, it puts Alcester businesses at an immediate disadvantage.

"We're in the middle of the country and we should be in the middle of the internet highway."

Paul Alexander, ICT development teacher at Alcester High School, said: "We've piloted the Broadband service for Warwickshire County Council, which intends to give all schools in the county the service."

BT needs 350 people to express interest. To register for broadband, which costs from £15-£30 per month, log on to the BT website or www.alcester.co.uk
