TOWN leaders have been told to tackle transport issues by angry passengers who feel they are being let down.

Public transport in Droitwich Spa was branded diabolical by pensioner Sheila Price, of Blackfriars Court, at the town's annual meeting.

She said support was needed to improve services, which were dramatically slashed by First bus company last year.

Mayor Terry Spencer, who chaired the meeting on Monday, March 3, said talks are ongoing with bus company bosses and revealed the director of First was meeting local councillors for a discussion and bus ride.

He told around thirty householders that talks were also underway to secure transport on Sundays for people travelling to bands in the Lido Park.

Mark Heel, of Burrish Street, suggested paying local companies to run mini-buses to live music events held throughout the summer.

But the Mayor told him: "Nothing is that simple I am afraid, there is merit in what you are saying but it's not a new idea."

Another resident complained about the loss of the free town bus pass, which now costs £10 per quarter.

It was axed by the town council last year following changes by central Government to concessionary fares. The Mayor said while he would like to see the pass reinstated, the council had needed to take a wider view when considering its budget.

A woman raised concerns about a drop in number 20 buses and said a new bus stop in Ombersley Way is being under-used because of route changes. Cllr Spencer agreed the number 20 service was well-used but said the council cannot tell the company where to send its buses.
