AT the meeting on February 28th, Mr Ian Alexander, of The War Research Society, based at Maypole, Birmingham, spoke to us about his involvement in 38 tours each year to historical sites of battlefields in Europe and beyond, taking in cemeteries, memorials and areas of wartime exploits involving bridges, dams, canals, dry docks and rocket sites.
Mr Alexander showed slides of the many wartime battlefields including the coastal areas at Normandy, Anzio and Salerno, inland battles at the Rhine crossing and at Nijmegen, also concentration camps including Auschwitz, Belsen and Colditz, and the famous raids at St.Nazaire, the Mohne Dam and the Arnhem bridge.
Anyone interested in aspects of local history is invited to join Wythall History Society's monthly meetings, which are held in Wythall on Friday evenings.
The next meeting will be on Friday, March 28, when Mr Patrick Baird will give a slide show entitled The Suburbs of Birmingham.
