AN old storage area will be transformed into a much-needed £40,000 facility at the Alexandra Hospital in about six months after tireless fund-raising by the League of Friends.
A dedicated room for 'multi-disciplinary' meetings is to be built where cases can be examined and discussed, particularly where cancer patients are involved.
Meetings are currently held in different rooms which do not have the facilities to allow proper discussion.
No money was available from the hospital trust budget so Dr Jim Stone, who is involved in the project, approached the Friends about coming to the rescue.
The room will have dual main roles. The first will be to ensure optimal surroundings for the many aspects of cancer care to be discussed and co-ordinated.
This will streamline cancer care and provide a chance for complex cases to be looked at.
The room will also provide a teaching facility for the training of laboratory staff and medical personnel.
It is hoped work on the facility will start soon.
