AN award-winning town choir will be flying the flag for Kidderminster at a prestigious singing competition on Saturday.

Defending champions Kidderminster Male Choir will be battling it out with nine other groups to try and win the much-coveted Choir of the Year title and a £1,000 cash prize.

The event, organised by the Welsh Association of Male Choirs, will be held at a newly refurbished Newport City Live Arena.

The group has always been in the competition's top three since it first joined in 1996 - except last year when the contest was cancelled due to sponsorship problems.

Member Don Moore, of All Saints Avenue, Bewdley, said: "If we do win it will be a big feather to our cap because there are some big Welsh choirs competing.

"We know what we are up against but we are going to give it our best shot anyway."

The 73-year-old second tenor added: "It's the biggest competition we sing in - in my time anyway. I've been with this choir for 14 years.

"We've done really well and we are very proud because we get to fly the flag for Kidderminster."

The group's 15-minute performance will include songs such as Mala Moja, Nant Y Mynydd, I Dream The Dream, and A Miller Medley - which consists of In The Mood, Chattanooga Choo-choo, Moonlight Serenade, and Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree.

The 50-strong group will be with conductor Harry Lewis and accompanist Maureen Bowkett.

Mr Moore, a retired BT underground cable installer, said if they win, the cash prize would go towards the group's tour fund.
