WHY is it that there seems to be an increasing lack of respect and sense of pride in keeping the streets around our housing estates clean, tidy and safe.? Everyday you see supermarket trolleys abandoned along the pavements in the Charity Road/Four Pools area. This can only be caused by lazy thoughtless people who are quite happy to take a trolley, (presumably to transport their grocery shopping home) and then leave the empty trolley at the side of the road rather than take it back to the supermarket. These abandoned trolleys often end up in the road increasing the risk of serious accidents with traffic - traffic that travels at ridiculous speeds despite a 30mph limit, but that's another problem that urgently needs addressing.
Maybe it is time that our supermarkets began a policy that I have been familiar with in other areas of the country. In other words - when collecting a trolley you have to pay a tariff of £1 to release a trolley and only get your money refunded on safe and correct return of the trolley.
It's a shame to have to have such systems in place and highlights the not so pleasant sign of our times. I think that decent and responsible supermarket customers would be only too happy to comply with this and the people responsible for trolley dumping would think twice if it effected their pocket! So come on, be responsible and take more care of our environment and clean up your act.
