DAVIS Cup fever hit the Malvern & County Indoor Tennis Centre recently when six teams competed in the British Tennis Coaches' Association Herefordshire & Worcestershire 11U Davis Cup competition.
Each team consisted of three players, two boys and a girl, plus a coach, and each match comprised a boys' singles, a girls' singles and a doubles. The best of three abbreviated sets were played which means first to four games with a lead of two games, a tie break at 4-4, and a tie break only in the third set.
Hopefully, matches wouldn't take too long, but like all Davis Cup ties, this was far from the case. After some very close matches, Spain (Pershore & Littleton) defeated Brazil (Manor Park 1) in the final by 2 rubbers to 1.
Great Britain (Bewdley) came third, defeating Australia (Droitwich) and France (Manor Park 2) beat Russia (Leominster).
Brazil (Manor Park 1 Team) was made up of Jamie Marks, Maxim Martchenko and Lizzie Gorton with coach Chris Skinner. France (Manor Park 2) consisted of Charlie Titmuss, Harry Wicketts and Jasmine Quiney with coach Elizabeth Veal.
All those involved agreed that the day had been a great success and will hopefully be repeated in the future.
Full Results: Spain bt France 2-1 bt Gt. Britain 2-1, Gt Britain bt France 2/1, Brazil bt Australia 2/1 bt Russia 3/0, Australia bt Russia 3/0.
