THERE were puzzled looks on the Labour benches when Bill Wiggin made the argument for continuing to hold General Elections on a Thursday.
Defying conventional wisdom, he said shifting to a Saturday would make it harder for women with chidren to vote.
He explained: "People who work and have kids will almost certainly have some form of child care for their children while they are working, but that will not be the case on a Saturday.
"A Saturday election would be detrimental for working mothers with children."
But one Labour wag commented: "It makes no sense. The Tories would do anything to keep the turnout down."
