MORE than 200 smoke alarms have been fitted to homes across Herefordshire and Worcestershire following a series of home checks.

The Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade made 177 home fire safety checks between September and January.

The visits were part of a pilot scheme to promote hazard awareness in the home.

The checks involve a visit to the home by fire crews arranged by prior appointment and with the occupier's consent.

Firefighters identify and remove known hazards, fit 10-year smoke alarms or replacement batteries as required. The crews also give safety advice to the occupant.

Training

The Hereford and Worcester Combined Fire Authority will hear at its meeting on Friday, March 21, that seven stations have taken part in the pilot.

There were 177 visits with 215 smoke alarms fitted and 81 replacement batteries put in.

The Home Fire Safety Checks provide a holistic approach to safety matters in the home, with teams working in conjunction with partner agencies in the public and voluntary sector.

Training of the whole brigade has now started and all crews are expected to be fully briefed by the end of the month.
