A MULTI-MILLION pound sports complex was officially opened at a ceremony by the Wychavon District Council chairman John Smith.

The £4.5m Avon Valley Leisure Centre in King George's Way houses a 25-metre, five-lane swimming pool, which has a moving floor allowing the depth to be altered.

The pool also has seating for around 70 spectators, along with lower seating for disabled spectators.

Councillor Smith unveiled a plaque at the ceremony, which was also attended by district councillor, VJ Smith, who represents Pershore and Wychavon Leisure Chairman Robin Smith.

"Yesterday's opening was a success," said Coun Smith. "It was good to see all the people involved in the project under one roof to celebrate the official opening.

"It is pleasing to see the council investment of £4.5m has made such a positive contribution to the community."

Other facilities at the complex include a fully-equipped fitness room and gym, which over looks the river and countryside, a sauna and steam room plus a jacuzzi and aerobics room.

Since the centre opened to the public last summer, more than 1,000 people have signed up as members, and around 920 people use the gym facilities.

Tim Deakin, community partnership manager said the centre is well-used, with tremendous benefits for Pershore residents.

"We are pleased to be able to support leisure provisions in such a significant way," he said.

Although the district council owns the centre, Wychavon Leisure runs the complex.

"We intend to make high-quality facilities available to the community at affordable prices," said Peter Williams, managing director of Wychavon Leisure.
