GEORGE Cowley's commendable concern for the victims of a possible attack on Iraq (You Say, March 11) seems inconsistent with his apparent indifference towards all who will suffer as a result of failure to confront a very real menace.

Such an attack will only arise if Saddam Hussein underestimates our resolve and fails to comply with treaty obligations.

Conversely, should he successfully call our bluff, I am sure he will be most grateful for the encouragement and support he has received from well-meaning people like our George.

JOHN HINTON,

Worcester.
