THOSE who attack the USA as an evil, imperialistic power need to observe the contrast in values between Eastern and Western Europe.

The countries of Eastern Europe know far more about imperialism than the arrogant, high-minded countries of Western Europe.

These countries have suffered too long under communist domination.

Hence, they can see past shallow anti-Americanism and embrace those libertarian values of democracy, the free market and national self-determination.

These are the values that the Conservative Party stands for. While Mr Blair must be commended for moving his government towards a libertarian ideology, his government is still bound by Euro-socialist statism.

The tragedy for those Eastern European countries, such as Poland and the Czech Republic, is that they are too quickly signing away their hard-won freedoms over to the bureaucratic Brussels paper-curtain.

MATTHEW A CLARKE,

Hallow, Worcester.

IN his letter, MEP Phillip Bushill-Matthews says: "If we want to see a change in the EU we have to change our own government first."

I should like to ask what good that would do.

All three political parties are determined to subjugate England to European rule.

Those who want nothing to do with Europe will be ignored.

In wanting "power" Phillip Bushill-Matthews "proves" he is the same as all the rest.

We have a landslide Labour government that most people voted against.

And the politicians not only see nothing wrong with that, they lust after the same power, for their party.

The fact that we have a thoroughly dishonest and unrepresentative election system is something all politicians are prepared to ignore.

How can politicians pretend to be democratically elected when "most" of the electorate doesn't vote, because elections are so corrupt?

N TAYLOR,

Worcester.
