AN ancient and rarely used court is being called today to decide a controversial plan to build a new church hall at St Laurence in Alvechurch.
Though planning permission for an £800,000 steel and brick hall has been granted by Bromsgrove Council, it is up to the Diocese of Worcester to give approval.
Objectors to the scheme called for a full hearing and so the Chancellor of the Diocese decided to hold a Consistory Court at the Bear Hill church.
Churchgoer Wilfrid English, who is representing those opposed to the plans today, said the court was a serious matter.
The proceedings will involve cross-examination of both those for and against the plans.
A spokesman for St Laurence Church said the last Consistory Court held in Worcestershire was in Tewkesbury last year following a dispute over pews.
