BILL Wiggin, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Tenbury Wells, was delighted to learn of the benefits of the National Fruit Scheme being reaped by primary schools across Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
The scheme, which aims to promote the eating of fresh fruit to youngsters across the country, has been rolled out in the Leominster constituency, where primary school pupils aged four to six are now receiving a free piece of fruit each day.
"It's great that children have regular access to fresh, healthy food, through this scheme. I sincerely hope that schemes like this contribute to a pattern of healthier eating over the long term. I also would like to know that the fruit is locally grown.
"British and particularly Herefordshire and Worcestershire fruit is the best in the world and it seems sensible to ensure that we encourage our own farmers as well as our youngsters," said Mr Wiggin.
