COUNCIL chiefs say they are confident they will find an alternative site for a cinema.

Wyre Forest District Council leader councillor Elizabeth Davies, said most people would rather have a cinema than see the building retained. She added: "I feel very sorry that one small group of people has taken on the task of protecting this building in the face of the will of the people.

"But I am confident we will find an alternative site, ideally in the town centre. We will do everything we can to progress this scheme."

Her deputy councillor Howard Martin said: "We need to show vision to develop the Piano Building's potential. I would like to see the top two or three floors become canalside apartments and the lower floor as a quality bar and restaurant.

"The three historic buildings there have a natural courtyard and we could create a Mediterranean-style area where people can dine and drink on summer evenings.

"We have an opportunity to make a focal point for the town."

Councillor Fran Oborski, Liberal group leader, called for urgent talks between council chiefs and Marks and Spencer over turning the High Street store into a cinema.

Nobody from Centros Miller or B&Q was available this week to discuss their plans for the building.
