MALVERN Hills residents will soon be able to recycle their waste without leaving their homes.

The district council has received £500,000 from Worcestershire County Council to help buy seven new refuse collection lorries that will be custom-made to carry both rubbish and recyclable waste.

For the first time in the district, householders will be given separate sacks for waste, paper and textiles and plastics which will be collected by the lorries as part of the usual waste collection service.

"There is a growing enthusiasm for recycling because people recognise the problems for the environment if we don't do it," said Councillor Paul Cumming.

"The need to recycle is clearly evident and this will make it much easier for people to do that."

The cash is the result of three months of talks with the county council. Both authorities work in partnership with the district collecting the waste and the county council disposing of it at the Wyre Piddle landfill site, near Pershore.

It will be combined with an urban kerbside recycling scheme, due to be introduced around September, which will collect glass from homes in the district's urban areas.
