MOTORISTS in Hereford are being warned to expect delays along one of its key roads this weekend.

Engineering works on Belmont Road, beneath the disused Great Western Railway bridge, will signal the end of a £100,000 scheme to upgrade the city's gas pipeline network.

But the road will be reduced to a single carriageway this Sunday, and temporary traffic lights will lead to disruption along the route.

Paul Jones, a network officer for pipeline operator Transco, apologised for the short-term inconvenience.

Conspicuous

"We're sorry if this will cause any difficulties to road users but I can assure them we will be conspicuous by our absence in Belmont Road once we have completed the job on Sunday," said.

"The new pipe is designed to stay in the ground for up to 80 years and, because it is plastic, it will not corrode and will need minimal maintenance for many years."

The project is part of a £50m programme by Transco throughout the West Midlands.
