IN Clive Smith's letter (Your Letters, March 14) giving a history lesson concerning Malvern Hills District Council in 1997, I very much look forward to when he covers 1998 and 1999. He will then be able to explain how he and his Liberal Democrat colleagues managed to turn a balanced budget into one with an annual deficit in excess of £1 million.

It has taken the Conservative and Independent Group several years to put that situation right and is the main cause of the reduction in revenue balances of which he complains.

He speaks about the possibility of history repeating itself. For the sake of the Council Tax-payers of the district, let us hope not.

Coun Alec Wall, Stoke Bliss.
