THE first-ever Worcestershire Beacon Race was announced in the Malvern Gazette 50 years ago.

The event was described by the secretary of Malvern Athletic Club, Mr D G Steer, as offering something of the challenge of mountaineering.

The course was to include a long steep climb up to the Wyche Cutting and along the ridge of the hills to the summit of the Beacon.

It was expected that the novelty of the race would attract a larger entry than the usual cross-country event.

The race was sponsored by the Gazette's parent company, Berrows Newspapers.
