DROITWICH Spa RFC First XV are jut two games away from winning promotion and securing their highest league position in the club's 30-year history.

Spa are one of three teams joint top of Midlands Four West (South), with Old Yardleians and Shipston-on-Stour, and will guarantee themselves at least a top two place - if not the championship - with victory in their final two games.

Julian Bailey's side travel to Marconi Coventry on Saturday week before a showdown at the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground with fellow league leaders Old Yardleians on April 12.

Spa are already enjoying one of the most successful times since they formed in 1972 and promotion to Midlands Three West (South) would propel them into uncharted territory.

They came close to automatic promotion last year by finishing third but now they have the opportunity to go one better.

Bailey said: "It's between the three of us now. It has boiled down to the last two games of the season and we have a realistic chance of promotion.

"We have to knuckle down now but we will take each game at a time. We will give Marconi Coventry the respect they deserve in order to hopefully come away with another good win. That one is a potential banana skin."

Spa, who have lost just once in the league since November, recorded their latest victory with a superb 26-8 victory at home to Old Halesonians last Saturday.

Bailey, who has been at the club for 18 months, was highly impressed with the display, which saw his and Neil Evans' players notch 23 unanswered points after trailing 8-3 at half time.

"The second half was the best 40 minutes they have played since I have been at the club," Bailey added. "Things went to plan for a change and everything we created went the way we wanted."
