Chill with Rachmaninov, Various Artists
With so many compilations of various musical genres being released, I was surprised to come across this one specifically featuring the music of Rachmaninov.
A fondness for Piano Concerto No 2, (first heard in my youth at the Royal Festival Hall) has made Rachmaninov's work a comfort zone - I know what to expect.
After suffering severe depression he composed this, his most popular piece. An accomplished pianist and composer, he left Russia after the communist revolution and eventually settled in the United States.
In his time he was one of the most distinguished pianists of the day and toured extensively. He did, however, compose works that have been transcribed for cello and specifically wrote Sonata in G Minor for cello and piano, a wonderfully lyrical composition.
