DISGRUNTLED residents calling for people power in Droitwich have met to find independent candidates to stand in town and district elections.

Around 23 people met at the Rifleman's Arms in Station Street, Droitwich, last night to decide who was going to stand for the Droitwich wards in Wychavon District Council and the town council in May.

Three possible election candidates came forward at the meeting but their names are being kept under wraps until a definite decision is made as to whether they will stand or not.

Damaged

The meeting was called by residents claiming schemes such as the lido redevelopment, plans to build a Waitrose supermarket in the centre of town and the demolition of the Worcestershire Hotel, have damaged the town.

However, one organiser, Claude Heeley said this was not a meeting to set up an independent party, but to support independent councillors.

"An independent councillor is worth two councillors because they take one of the party councillor's seats and they will not follow whatever their political boss said," said Mr Heeley.

Positive

"It was a very positive, productive meeting.

"We went along to show respect for Droitwich and to get something moving for the people of Droitwich."

A further meeting will be held later this week to reach a decision on who will be standing. Any independent councillors have until Tuesday, April 1, to officially enter the election race.
