MR Partridge of Worcester (You Say, March 18) is depressed.
He should be - I think we are all depressed at the thought of an asylum seeker suing our government for £30,000. What sort of lawyer takes him on? What sort of asylum seeker bites the hand that feeds him?
What should really depress Mr Partridge is the fact we went to war in Afghanistan to fight the Taliban and now we have at least 14 Taliban soldiers receiving benefits in the UK.
Aid agencies predict up to two million Iraqis could become refugees as a result of the current conflict. Should we welcome these into the UK? Why not? After all, the Lottery fund has just given £800,000 to organisations supporting asylum seekers.
Can one assume therefore that the more Lottery tickets we buy, the more immigrants we can accept?
What a pity Lottery funding is not made to our own institutions such as the RNLI, RSPCA, RSPCC, the blind and many other deserving home charities.
I always thought that's where charity began. I certainly no longer buy Lottery tickets - I'm too depressed.
JOHN TAINTON,
Lower Broadheath.
