HANBURY Bowling club held its annual meeting at the Vernon Arms. Fifty-four members, including many from Bromsgrove, sat down to a capital goose supper followed by entertainment, which included an accordionist. Dennis Baylis won the club championship.

THE Rev Hugh Jones, from Sandals Road, Barnt Green, retired vicar of St Andrew's in the village for 33 years, died aged 80. It was said he was one of "Barnt Green's institutions" and would be remembered for raising the money to build the Church of England schools.

A PLOT of land at the new council estate at Charford, Bromsgrove, had been cultivated and cleared of trees in order to make 18 tenants' allotments. Rents would be 10/- (50p) per week.

THE continued vandalism of Rubery's public conveniences prompted Bromsgrove Urban District Council to abandon a plan to install a drinking fountain in a nearby park because it was felt that some people in the village had scant respect for the authority's property. The toilet's turnstiles and coin slots were continually having to be repaired.

AN increase in the number of cattle classes was the main feature of the Bromsgrove Farmers' Club show held at Martin Gibbs' Upper Bentley Farm. The ploughing competition, which this year did not include any horse teams, was however, marred by the hard ground.
