INMATES at Bromsgrove's workhouse were unhappy with the broth, bread and cheese that made up the regular Monday menu. The ruling guardians decided instead to give them beef stew containing fat, flour, carrots and onions. The change would cost less than 2/- (10p) per day.

A GROUP of lads from Hanover Street, Bromsgrove, fell foul of the law when they were prosecuted for playing football near their homes. Town magistrates fined brothers Charles, Thomas and Frederick Atkins, William Duffill and Alf Giles 2/6 (12.5p) each including costs.

CORONATION festivities in Droitwich were being finalised following a public meeting in the Town Hall. The big day would start with a service in St Andrew's Church followed by a free dinner for all aged over 60 in Salters' Hall. Later a procession of some 800 children proceeded by the town band will march to Westwood Park for tea and sports activities and where each child would be presented with a mug.

The day would end with a dance in Salters' Hall.

TWO patients recovering from scarlet fever at the recently opened Hill Top Isolation Hospital in Bromsgrove cheated death when a nurse mistakenly gave them a spoonful of marking ink instead of meat juice as a tonic. The ink, which contained nitrate of silver, had been put in the wrong bottle in a cupboard in one of the wards. One patient had collapsed while the other was made very ill but thankfully both recovered after having their stomachs pumped. The authorities promised to hold an inquiry.
