DROITWICH Town Council was deeply upset at discovering that the River Salwarpe was being systematically polluted by effluent from Bromsgrove Sewage Farm, mainly after dark.
It was said that many people in the Spa area used the river water for drinking and bathing. Councillors decided to gather more evidence before making a formal complaint to Bromsgrove.
DESPITE the early Easter holiday the weather was kind and the usual large crowds were to be seen on the Lickey Hills.
THE workforce employed by Bromsgrove builders J and A Brazier were treated to a dinner at the Golden Cross Hotel in Bromsgrove. Their host was Mr Charles Steer to mark the firm having completed building his new residence, the Forelands, on the outskirts of the town. Around 120 men sat down to a capital meal after which they listened to speeches before joining together to sing the National Anthem.
THE ruling Board of Guardians at Bromsgrove Workhouse threw their weight behind a plan to bring in legislation to take away children belonging to vagrants and place them in special industrial schools in a bid to prevent them following in their parents' footsteps. But guardian Job Leadbetter, always sympathetic with the tramps' plight, said not everyone who tramped the streets was workshy and a vagabond, most were genuinely searching for work.
MANY shops in Bromsgrove were stocking up with fairy lights, lanterns and bunting in readiness for the forthcoming coronation. Roper's Fancy Bazaar with premises in High Street were advertising cheap Union Flags measuring 15ft by 7ft 6ins.
