IT was with disbelief that I read of the proposal to open a sex shop in Barbourne.

When we moved here in 1975, Worcester was a beautiful city, full of interesting and charming individual shops. Apart from CrownGate, most of the city centre has now gone downhill.

Some areas taken over by cheap, tacky shops. This in turn changes the type of visitor that the city attracts and so we face a downward spiral.

Anyone requiring the services of a sex shop can find all they need on the internet.

Of course, the biggest impact will be on the people who regularly use the shopping area - the local residents, mostly families and the elderly. Do you really believe that they will appreciate having to pass a sex shop as they nip out for a paper or a loaf?

The area is also full of school children - not only those attending the local primary schools but also the Worcester Grammar, the Alice Ottley and Bishop Perowne.

Barbourne is a neighbourhood, a local residential area, a place where people live - not a sleazy inner city backwater.
